The Imperial Palace in Shenyang was our destination this afternoon. It was the seat of the Qing Dynasty who eventually overthrew the Ming Dynasty and moved to Beijing. It was similar in design to the Forbidden City but much smaller in area. The role of concubines became much clearer today as their high rank in society was evident in the size and style of their dwellings. The concubines were often daughters of tribal leaders who helped keep the empire together.
