Xi’an City Wall

Our first tour took us to the Xi’an City Wall, the most complete example of a city fortification still standing in China. The original wall was started in 194 BCE and took about four years to construct. Our guide told us that workers could face capital punishment for breaking a brick during construction. Talk about an incentive package! We entered by the South Gate and came into a courtyard. Originally there was a tower in the courtyard where archers would fire upon the enemy as they broke through the gate. Our group walked or rode bikes along the wall.
